Puppy Guide

Puppy Guide

Welcome to Farm Beach Puppies!

We’re thrilled you’re considering one of our multigenerational micro mini Bernedoodles. This guide is designed to help you prepare for your new furry family member.

These are things we’ve found to work, modify what fits your family lifestyle and routine.

1. Nutrition:

  • Feed high-quality puppy food that meets nutritional standards. We recommend the yellow bag of puppy food from Costco. We also like their Kirkland bones for treats that can be broken up for puppies and used for training rewards.
  • Follow feeding guidelines on the packaging based on your puppy’s weight and age.
  • Ensure fresh water is available

2. Socialization:

  • Expose your puppy to different people, environments, and other animals.
  • Take your puppy everywhere you can, including frequent car rides, to build a confident and well-adjusted dog who enjoys going with you and is well behaved later on.
  • Start socialization early to ensure they adapt well to new experiences, people and environments.

3. Training:

We recommend the Puppr app for guided training sessions and tips. It’s easy for everyone in the family to download and use. Having everyone in the family using the same commands and training will keep your puppy from getting confused and will give you a better train  in g experience.

  • Begin basic training (sit, stay, come) as soon as you bring your puppy home.
  • Use positive reinforcement techniques like treats and praise.
  • Consistency and patience are key.
  • Love, patience and praise go a long way
  • Make sure your puppy knows who is in charge. They feel safe when they know what the boundaries are.

4. Potty Training:

  • Take your puppy potty within 20 minutes of eating.
  • Feed your puppy in their crate, and if they don’t go potty after eating, put them back in the crate and take them out again in 10 min intervals.
  • Establish a consistent routine to help your puppy understand where and when to go.
  • Ignore your puppy until they go potty outside. Once they do offer lots of praise and treats.

5. Health Care:

  • Schedule regular vet check-ups to monitor growth and health.
  • Follow a vaccination schedule as recommended by your vet.
  • Your puppy has been dewormed regularly. Keep up with worm prevention as instructed by your vet.

6. Exercise:

  • Provide regular playtime and exercise appropriate for your puppy’s age and breed.

7. Grooming:

  • Brush your puppy’s coat regularly to prevent matting and to desensitize them to grooming practices.
  • Bathe your puppy as needed, but not too frequently to avoid skin irritation.
  • Trim nails regularly and keep ears clean you can get tips from your groomer for in between visits.
  • Start grooming at home by brushing and playing with your puppy’s ears and paws to desensitize them.
  • Incorporate teeth brushing into the grooming routine to maintain dental health.

8. Teething:

  • Provide safe and appropriate bones and chew toys to help with teething discomfort.
  • We recommend raw hide bones. If they have access to something to chew on it helps cut down on chewing things they shouldn’t. It also helps to wear them out.

9. Safety:

  • Puppy-proof your home by removing hazards (electrical cords, toxic plants, small objects).
  • Provide a safe space for your puppy to rest and relax, such as a crate or a designated area.

10. Vaccinations and Parvo Precautions:

  • Follow your vet’s vaccination schedule to protect your puppy from diseases like parvovirus.
  • Avoid walking your puppy in public places until they have received all their parvo vaccines.
  • Limit exposure to other dogs and environments like dog parks where parvo may be present until vaccinations are complete.

11. Mental Stimulation:

  • Provide toys and activities to keep your puppy’s mind engaged.
  • Rotate toys to maintain interest and challenge your puppy with puzzle toys.

12. Love and Attention:

  • Spend quality time bonding with your puppy through play, training, and cuddling.
  • Understand that patience and love are crucial in raising a happy and healthy dog.

13. What if my puppy has accidents in the house?

Be patient and consistent with potty training. Accidents are common in the beginning. Stick to a potty routine and offer lots of opportunities to go outside. There are many resources online to help you train your puppy to alert you that they need to go outside. Some are bells hanging from the door or barking at the door. These techniques will take time but are effective if you don’t have a doggy door. We recommend a doggy door option if available and offer lots of praise and treats when they use it. Enjoy this puppy phase and bonding with your pet in a positive way!
